The brand new school year is upon us which means there are brand new faces to see, names to remember, and lessons to learn. One of these new faces is Tony Monk, the Audio Video Production teacher.
“Mr. Monk is great…he brings a lot of experience to Lake Highlands A/V. He’s worked in broadcast production before, he’s founded his own company which he is the CEO,” stated Nathan Macy, a Senior who is closely tied to the A/V program.
Monk’s extensive experience makes him a perfect candidate to provide students a peek into the A/V industry.
“My style reflects how you would learn in the industry. You will run across many people with talents that differ from yours and pick up various different skills along the way. I want my students to be open from learning alongside each other and to know I am right there with them,” he explained.
Throughout the school year his students will learn a variety of lessons and create creative pieces of work. These lessons and assignments will help Monk’s students be successful in their future endeavors.
Monk, who is in his third year of teaching, is excited to show students “how to be creative through their projects & make money in this industry. Giving them a great understanding of what their value as media heads will mean in the future.”
Apart from being an A/V teacher, he does other things to help young people get their foot in the door. He feels like there should be more opportunities in the film industry for minorities and has taken steps to make that happen.
“For my own company, I run a summer internship program, giving those same opportunities to young media hopefuls looking to have their starting point in the industry,” he said.
Whether you want to write scripts or be a producer, his class is a great opportunity to prepare for a future in the A/V industry. There’s a wide range of nuances to navigate in the industry, and Monk is a good source the students of Lake Highlands can go to if they are interested.
“Be willing to LEARN EVERYTHING! Production studios want to pay for individuals with multiple skills. If you plan on taking this career path, don’t limit yourself to just one thing,” he added.
