JROTC is a leadership training program designed to help students build character, and prepare them for the future, but students are discouraged to enroll for many reasons.
“The biggest misconception about JROTC is that you have to join the army when you graduate,” states Lieutenant Colonel Gerald, the Senior Army Instructor for JROTC.
However, joining the military is not a requirement. The main mission is to motivate students to become better citizens and people, but the program also offers leadership training, character growth, and mental development.
“The purpose of JROTC is to make better citizens, not put students in boots,” Gerald explained.
What’s even better is that it helps students grow as individuals, and there are several clear contrasts from their pre-JROTC selves to their current selves.
“I think my entire demeanor is just better. I’m as confident as ever and JROTC has helped me with that,” comments Cadet Major Cline, the Battalion Executive Officer and second-in-command of the program.
With JROTC’s specialized lessons, unique environment, and numerous opportunities to improve and get involved, the organization as a whole truly shapes the character of those who join.
“It challenges you physically and mentally, but it builds you up not only as a person but as a leader. The uniform is one thing but honestly if you do what you need to do or go above and beyond in leadership you will succeed not only in life but within yourself,” Cline claims.
In short, there are a lot of high expectations, but the experience is life-changing, and it’s one of the best programs to help shape the next generation.
“People should expect that they will be part of a greater team, not just focusing on themselves, and they will be pushed to be a better version of themselves at all times,” Gerald declares.
