From the Pacific coast of Fukushima, Japan, to Room L-B103 in Lake Highlands High School, Mrs. Adkins, or as her students call her, Asaco Sensei, is introducing the Japanese language and culture to her students. Her goal is to help students go out and use that knowledge in their lives.
“I would be happy if, after graduating from the school, students could use what they have learned in the Japanese class, such as going to a Japanese restaurant, etc.,” Adkins shared.
Both Berkner High School and Richardson High School have Japanese courses of their own, but Adkins’s class is about more than just learning a new language; it’s an opportunity for students to understand and learn to love a culture different from their own. Getting to give her students a greater outlook on the world through Japanese is what Adkins loves most about teaching.
“I hope that learning another language will broaden students’ perspectives and give more compassionate judgments on life,” she expressed.
Adkins incorporates a large variety of fun activities and experiences for her students, so that they can better understand Japanese culture for themselves.
“We’ve done lots of different fun things in class, from making sushi, trying on kimonos, and even watching anime films,” commented sophomore Lauren Hancock, a student in her second year of Japanese.
“But my favorite has to be the yearly New Years card contest. Last year, we made dragon-themed cards. We held an art contest where the entire class got to vote on their favorite card. It was fun to make art and learn about a Japanese tradition in the process!”
Not only does Adkins love to teach Japanese, she also cares for her students greatly and always tries to ensure everyone is comfortable.
“I can proudly say she’s the best teacher I’ve ever had. Asaco Sensei’s teaching is what I hope to see from all my teachers. She is calm and understanding. If we don’t get something she will explain it in a way we will understand,” added another student, sophomore Violet Tablas.
Adkins has a clear passion for getting to share her culture and helping the next generation of students to grow into more considerate people who can better understand the lives of others. Each and every one of her students is lucky to call Asaco Sensei their teacher.
