“And what is your position on the team? I don’t know if you have a captain roll. You have a rank, a yeller, like, right?”
“I have a ladder ranking. So this year I’m number one on varsity for both singles and doubles. I got to step up this year and play. Last year played number two singles on varsity and number one doubles, but this year, got the opportunity to play at the number one spot. So it’s been great.”
“Then you mentioned that the team that made it was undefeated in District play, in district or one district, were you undefeated? Or did you win it?”
“We were undefeated in District play and ended up going to the third round at Regions tennis.”
“Why do you think we’re able to go so far?”
“I think this year, I think the whole team is super disciplined. I think we put in a lot of work during our practices, and everyone’s really serious, and it’s been really good. I mean, I think we have really good depth this year, and we’ve had some kids step up that played lines that you know last year, they were not even on the JV roster. This year, they’re playing the back end of Varsity, and everyone really stepped up and did really well.”
I started playing tennis during 7th grade, when it was offered during athletics. I loved it and then started taking lessons starting my 8th grade year, and ended up winning districts for singles at the end of 8th grade. This made me want to try out for the highschool tennis team.
- This tennis season was really awesome. We ended up winning first place in our district. We were undefeated going 6-0. Then we advanced all the way to the area.
- I think the team went as far as we did because we were all really determined. When it was time to play we all played to the best of our ability and always cheered on our team mates. I honestly don’t know what we could’ve done better, sometimes it’s just the way it goes that people are just better than you at certain things.
- My favorite thing this season is when we played pearce. It was one of our last matches of the season and if we won against Pearce then we would get first place in our district. I won both of my matches and the atmosphere was really uplifting and supportive because we wanted to win.
I have been playing tennis competitively for 6 six years. I started playing tennis in 7th grade on the Lake Highlands Junior High (now Middle School Team), joining as a passtime because the school did not have a baseball team. I am now the Varsity Team Building Captain for the team helping direct practices and organize events. Our team did great this year, winning districts by a large margin, only losing in Area to the number five team in the state, Plano West. Although my tennis official record was not so good this year, I got the opportunity to try out Mixed Doubles (one guy and one girl) which was a new and challenging experience. I grew through the new experience of trying out mixed doubles and being a captain, which has helped me solidify my teamwork and leadership abilities. This team got as far as we did through hard work in and out of school, from outside lessons to sweating daily in school, this team deserved to make it as far as we did. My favorite part of this season has been the practices we have had together, I think this team is incredibly fun to be around and I am a little bitter that this is my last year. My main challenge this year was finding the motivation to put in the work outside of school, as tennis can be hard work at times. Putting aside the few challenges this season of tennis has been great, and I am excited to see where the team goes in the future.
