A Look Ahead at the Films of 2025
This past year was full of ups and downs for the world of film. Inside Out 2 and Deadpool & Wolverine were received with praise while Borderlands and Joker: Folie à Deux let audiences down. 2025 has potential to be an even better year with plenty of highly anticipated movies coming out. That being said, let’s take a look at some of the films that will be hitting theaters in the upcoming year!
How to Train Your Dragon, June 13
Growing up, the original How to Train Your Dragon movie was always one of my favorites. Now, I’ll get to relive the experience of watching it for the first time with the live action adaptation. Based on the recent trailer that came out, it looks like the adaptation will be pretty similar to the original, but I hope they do something new with it such as expanding upon the world-building or adding their own twist to the plot to make it unique.
Superman: Legacy, July 11
Superman: Legacy will debut as the first film of James Gunn’s DCU in the summer. After seeing how well Gunn adapted the Guardians of the Galaxy from comics to the big screen, I’m confident that he’ll be able to do the same with Superman. Unlike many of the other film iterations we’ve seen of Superman, this movie will not be a origin story. Instead, the film will focus on Superman embracing his Kryptonian heritage.
The Fantastic Four: First Steps, July 25
The beloved Fantastic Four team from Marvel comics will be finally joining the MCU! Ever since the cameo of the team’s leader, Reed Richards, in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, fans have been dying to see them. Right now, we don’t know much about the plot, but we do know that the Fantastic Four will be facing off against the fearsome Galactus as the main villain. The past few MCU movies have left a lot to be desired, but I have faith that The Fantastic Four: First Steps will turn out well.
Wicked: Part Two, November 21
Elphaba and Glinda will be returning to theaters next fall to pick up where Wicked left off. The first film, released this past November, was a huge hit. Audiences were left spellbound by the stellar vocal performances of Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande. The movie is an adaptation of the broadway musical Wicked, but it also adds many elements from the book to create a compelling story. Overall, I think Wicked: Part Two will be just as good, if not better, than the first part.
Zootopia 2, November 26
Released in 2016, Zootopia quickly became one of many highly-acclaimed Disney films. Now, we’ll get to see Judy and Nick back in action as they’re faced with a brand new case to crack. The scene shown at D23 took place in a swamp environment not shown in the first movie, which makes me think Zootopia 2 is going to explore some new areas of the animal metropolis.
