For the first time in several years, LHHS competed in a robotics competition.
The Young Students in Science and Engineering class led by Mr. Whitham took on the invigorating task at Dallas College Brookhaven Campus in November. They decided to compete after a 10-year partnership with University of Texas at Dallas ended due to recent staff reductions.
“We had to scramble to find a new program to work with this year. We ended up registering for the last spot in the Dallas BEST robotics competition,” Whitham said.
It took the team eight weeks to completely finish building and designing their robot, and then it was time to go against other schools.
Their last-minute entry to the robotics race was a challenging and strenuous venture. Despite the daunting task, Josiah Henderson (12), one of the team designers found it to be an interesting learning experience.
“This was the first time I’ve been in a robotics competition. It was a cool way to see the ideas people came up with when designing their robots,” he said.
