Have you gotten the chance to meet Lake Highlands High School’s very own wildcats? For the past few months, we’ve had two feral cats, Midnight and Pebbles, living on campus.
Midnight showed up in October, and Pebbles arrived the following week. Since then, the two cats have been residing in the school courtyard. Midnight was named after his black fur like the night, and Pebbles was named for his stone-colored gray pelt.
Sherry Hicks, executive assistant, has been the one primarily taking care of Midnight and Pebbles. She checks on them over the weekends and even visited over winter break to make sure they were doing well.
“With the help of a cat rescue group, we were able to trap Midnight and get him fixed and all his vaccinations,” Hicks explained. “He was then released back into the courtyard where he is the most comfortable.”
To keep the cats safe, Mrs. Lozada created a tiny home for the cats out of an insulated cooler. In addition to the cat house, there’s also a hole in the ground that lets the cats under the building to keep warm and stay out of the rain.
Many other teachers have also contributed to providing for the cats.
“I even asked for donations from the staff and several teachers have helped with a Kitty Fund to keep the cats fed,” Hicks added.
Hicks hopes to socialize the cats, but it may take some adjusting until they feel safe around people.
“Feral cats have never been around humans so they are incredibly timid and scared,” she commented.
While the cats are not yet social, the goal is to find families who will be able to take care of them in the future. Until they find a home, we can enjoy having such adorable furry friends here at school!
“We love having actual Wildcats on our campus and I know teachers and students have enjoyed watching them play and lounge in the courtyard,” Hicks finished.
