The Lake Highlands Girls Varsity Basketball team claimed a spot in the playoffs as third place in district.
Their season ended in the first round by falling to the Grand Prairie Warriors with a score of 62-43. It capped off a season of growth for the team.
“The group of girls in our program demonstrate how much fun they have, as well as their ability to look out for each other yet hold everyone accountable,” says Coach Meiklejohn, the head coach of the girls varsity basketball team
Their victory against San Antonio Word Incarnate was their first district win.
“We traveled to Georgetown, Texas to play games and have fun with the team during our stay. Our boys b-ball team was there cheering us on during the game,” Coach MJ stated.
To prepare for their games, the girls study film, create scouting reports of their opposing team, and workout in the gym on a regular basis.
“I prepared (for district) by just listening and focusing in practice,” says Sienna Smith-Dumm, one of the girls’ varsity captains.
Since district games can be challenging, the team has to strategize and study the other team’s abilities to gain the upper hand.
“We get to play teams twice in a season so we get to see what they are very good at, and their weaknesses that we can highlight in the second round,” Smith-Dumm explains.
Despite being a younger team, the players have shown resilience and perseverance with a 8-4 record in district.
“They have proven they can compete with some of the better teams in our district!” Coach MJ said.
