Lake Highlands High School has a powerlifting team and one exceptional student has made it to state. Juan Rodriguez Ariz (11) was that student.
Powerlifting is a sport that includes three lifts; a squat, bench, and deadlift. You get 3 attempts to complete the lift, and the highest total from the three wins the meet.
Rodriguez Ariz said he first started the intense sport during his freshman year from football and fell in love with it ever since.
“I hope I can go to college for it,” he said. “For my senior year, I pray I can get a scholarship. If football doesn’t work out, powerlifting is my back up career plan.”
At regionals, he placed 2nd which qualified him for the state competition. Rodriguez Ariz went on to explain his big goals for the meet.
“My goal going into my state meet is to (lift) a total of 1550-1600. I just want to perform better than I did at my last meets,” Rodriguez Ariz states. “I want to squat 550 or more, bench 475 or more, and deadlift 550 or more.”
