A new barbershop will be implemented for the next school year and will provide a barbering license after finishing. The students, led by Brandie James of the cosmetology class, will be working in the barbering Class.
“We have such a high demand every year from students expressing interest in obtaining a barbering license while in high school,” says James.
Since the new class will need extra space, the food science room, located in the E hall of H building, and the cosmetology room, in the second floor of C hall in the L building, will be swapped and both rooms will be completely remodeled.
James has great plans for the renovated cosmetology room.
“We will have trendy, clean-line, and up-to-date equipment that is comparable to our professional salons within the community,” she said.
Students can apply for the next semester by talking to either Ms. James or Ms. Love through the month of April.
Susan Kirkham, the food science teacher, looks forward to the new rooms being renovated.
“The new labs have gray wood grain cabinets, gray vinyl plank wood grain flooring, black quartz counters and white walls. All new!” Kirkham exclaims.
Kirkham has been the LHHS food science teacher for five years and believes that food science is an integral high school subject.
“Food Science teaches the science behind our recipes and food prep. We look at things like what makes dough rise and how,” Kirkham said.
The class is a science elective for seniors that involves learning about the sophisticated methodologies of food cooking and their components.
“We look at how to handle food safely so we don’t get sick. This includes how to keep a sanitary kitchen,” Ms. Kirkham says.
