After a little over a decade of being stuck in pre-production, a movie based on the hit game Minecraft has finally released in theaters.
A Minecraft Movie has been the source of a variety of memes due to the over the top dialogue from the main character Steve, played by Jack Black. Black adds a lot of charm and comedy to the film.
You’ve probably heard some of these lines explaining different things from the game. The most popular is when Steve yells out “Chicken Jockey” to another character.
The overall premise involves a magical cube that transports a group of diverse characters into the dimension of Minecraft, where Steve has to show them the ropes of the blocky world and get the group back home.
If you play the game, you’d know that the plot isn’t accurate to what you do in Minecraft, and even if you didn’t, you’d probably think the plot is a little over the top and basic.
I had very low expectations going into the movie because of how ridiculous it looked. I felt like the movie was going to be so bad it’s good, but I did end up enjoying myself.
While it definitely isn’t Oscar worthy, I did find myself laughing at the jokes and connecting with the characters. I wish they gave the women protagonists more screen time to really flesh out the entire group, but that is my only real issue.
The film almost felt self aware that it’s ridiculous and goofy, and that’s what made it so enjoyable. My theater was filled with people quoting every single one liner Steve said.
Even if the movie isn’t the most faithful adaptation, it does include a solid amount of references to Minecraft and cameos from some legendary content creators. If you’re looking for a fun and cheesy film to watch with some friends or family, I would definitely go to a showing of A Minecraft Movie!
