Summer is upon us, and freedom is coming our way. But with so much free time, how can we make the most of our vacation? I say some good ol’ fashion work ought to do the job.
There are two reasons why I think every student should work this summer and three ideal jobs I’d suggest to ambitious teenagers.
According to a recent survey, nearly one third of LHHS students currently have a job and work. These people get it. Having a job prepares students for their future and offers them sweet freedom.
The ‘real world’ is soon approaching for us high school students, and holding a job provides us with work experience, networking opportunities, and a better resume. All of these things are crucial to character development and future success.
Unlike what many people believe, I think working actually gives people more freedom. You are more financially independent and can support your family. You are able to attend concerts, go to restaurants, and plan trips. You are given responsibility and the expectation that you fulfill them. I have found these to be freeing.
If you want to be free and prepared, there are so many options when it comes to summer jobs for high school students.
Lifeguarding
One of the all-time classic jobs for high schoolers over the summer is lifeguarding and its associated jobs. There are plenty of local pools and water parks that are always looking for employees. Typically requiring a certification and offering flexible hours, lifeguarding is a great option for people who want to make some good money and get their tan on.
Retail
From sales to customer service, working in retail is a fantastic option for teenagers seeking a job. In retail, you will get lots of hands-on experience in business operations and customer interactions. There are endless opportunities to work in retail, and it tends to be an easy industry to enter with little to no previous experience.
Restaurants
Like our other options, the pay is pretty solid in entry-level positions in the food industry, plus you can get tips and potentially free food/discounts. Working in restaurants provides employees with lots of customer interaction and food handling experience.
