Lake Highlands is home to many remarkable athletes who have gone on to play for competitive colleges across the country, but lacrosse players have received little attention without a team at the school. London Hicks (12) is breaking the mold, having signed with Delaware State University to play on their lacrosse team!
Right now, Hicks plays on the Panthers team for Bridge Lacrosse, a Texas nonprofit organization.
Ever since she first picked up the sport in eighth grade, Hicks has grown to love and appreciate the opportunities it’s given her.
“I get to help other kids who may not have the chance to play lacrosse and introduce them to something new,” Hicks said. “Knowing that I am having an impact in their life makes me very happy and grateful to give back.”
Hicks expressed her excitement to attend Delaware State.
“Everyone was so welcoming and (the coaches) saw so much I have to offer as a Student-Athlete.”
While at Delaware, Hicks plans to major in mass communications but still focus on sports to improve her skills.
“I am most looking forward to growing as an athlete and developing my skills and playing style,” she explained.
Hicks accredits much of her success in lacrosse to the support of those around her.
“I can’t forget to mention my AMAZING teammates who push me every single practice and make me hunger to be better and they are patient with me so that we can all succeed. They have been there for me when I needed them the most.”
While she’s gotten a lot of help from others, Hicks’s own talents speak for themselves.
“London’s tenacity to work toward her own goals with self-discipline and independence stands out uniquely within our organization, and we are so proud of her resilience and drive to work hard for herself and those around her,” commented David Higbee, the executive director of Bridge Lacrosse.
Getting to play at Delaware State is a great achievement for Hicks, and she can’t wait to join the team next year.
“I would have never thought in 8th grade that I would get to this point, but I look back at how far I have come, and I am proud that I will be wearing Delaware State across my jersey this coming up school year,” she finished.
