The boys varsity and J.V. track teams both won district, making this the first time in 16 years!
Coach Hattemer, the varsity boys track coach, explained that you want to make sure you are peaking physically at the right time, and the district was that time for them.
“This is something that we take great pride in,” Hattemer said. “We want to be sure to compete at the highest level possible, which requires a lot of training and dedication, but we also want to enjoy the process as much as we can.”
Rhett Austin (10), a 1600 distance runner who placed 3rd at district, said that during practice varsity track distance runners train, run, and work out together when they have similar workouts.
“At meets, we all arrive a couple of hours before our races, and then we begin our warm-ups together around 30 minutes before racing,” Austin said.
Anthony Green (12), who placed 6th while running the 4×100 relay, said that one of the hardest parts is adapting throughout the whole season to make the right team moves come district.
“We see just about every school there at least three times all season before the district meet even comes along, so we’ve just about seen all our competition and they know us as well as we know them,” Green said.
Despite the challenges and the lows of the past, they persevered and came out on top at the meet.
“Looking at what we have returned from what we have at this year’s district team, I expect we will compete for the district title again next year,” Hattemer concludes.
