Every year there is a new trendy item people go crazy over, and this time it is the Labubu. This fuzzy critter has taken the world by storm, and I feel like this is just another example of overconsumption.
These creatures come from the story “The Monsters,” made by Chinese-illustrator Kasing Lung in 2015.
Pop Mart, a Chinese toy brand, collaborated with Lung to make figurines during 2019, which turned into collectable keychains 4 years later.
According to Wired.com, the company has made $670 million this year in just Labubu sales.
If these collectables have been around for a while, why are people buying them now? The answer, like most fads, is celebrity influence.
The celeb who really kicked it off was Lisa from Blackpink, who has shared her vast collection of the dolls online, and even sported one while performing.
Are the dolls cute? A little bit.
Would I buy a whole bunch of them? Definitely not.
The biggest problem with Labubus and any other trendy product, is how people buy way too much of them for crazy prices.
I’ve seen videos of people going crazy for these creatures, and there have been listings of variants that go for upwards of $300.
Labubus are made from soft vinyl, which uses plasticizers to be made. Plasticizers leach into the environment and do damage to ecosystems.
I see the appeal of them, but I don’t see the need to buy dozens of the same thing, just in a different color.
