Gilmore Girls is a popular TV show that seems to encapsulate the essence of fall.
It takes place in the early 2000s in Stars Hollow, Connecticut and has become a cult classic in popular culture. One of the main characters, Rory Gilmore, has three notable boyfriends throughout the seven seasons of the show, and I’m going to talk about which one of them was the best for Gilmore. SPOILERS AHEAD!!
Dean Forester
Dean Forester first dated Gilmore in Seasons 1-3 when Gilmore was a sophomore at Chilton Preparatory School. Forester went to the local high school, Stars Hollow High School. They dated again in season 5, when Gilmore was at Yale University, and Forester was a construction worker.
Forester was a committed boyfriend and was obsessed with Gilmore. He would call multiple times a night and always wanted to be with her. He even went as far as to build her an entire car. Many viewers consider him to be the most attractive of Gilmore’s boyfriends.
However, Forester could also be seen as clingy and controlling. He didn’t support Gilmore’s dream of going to Harvard and was often selfish when she had to do anything else that wasn’t spending time with him. Forester also broke up with Gilmore in Season 3 in a public setting and yelled at her which humiliated Gilmore. When they dated again in Season 5, it was because Forester cheated on his wife with Gilmore. These are both extreme red flags.
Jess Mariano
Jess Mariano and Gilmore only dated in Season 3 right after Gilmore and Forester broke up. Mariano was a bit troubled as he had been sent away from his home in New York City to live with an uncle in Stars Hollow. Mariano went to high school with Forester, which created a lot of tension because they had an ongoing feud over Gilmore.
Mariano and Gilmore arguably had the best chemistry out of all of her boyfriends. They connected over their love of literature and a similar music taste. Gilmore and Mariano had a good banter and spent a lot of time together. They had a passionate relationship and a deep connection with each other.
Although they had a strong bond, Mariano was not a good communicator. He would often withhold a lot of information from Gilmore about his life. He was emotionally distant due to previous family issues which caused them to be disconnected. Gilmore and Forester became friends after their breakup, and Mariano was often jealous of the friendship.
Gilmore and Mariano also had very contrasting personalities. She was very academically driven while he was unmotivated and didn’t value education in the same way she did. Their relationship ended when Mariano failed his senior year of high school and ran away to California to see his dad. He ghosted Gilmore in this process and left unresolved feelings in the relationship.
Logan Huntzberger
Logan Huntzberger and Gilmore dated when they were both at Yale University from the middle of season 5 through season 7.
Huntzberger came from a lot of money, so he was able to provide for Gilmore. He supported her aspirations of becoming a journalist and was very understanding. He provided humor to Gilmore’s life, as she had been known to be uptight, and he made her the center of his life by giving her a lot of attention.
However, Huntzberger had a history of disloyalty. They started their relationship as friends with benefits because he was scared of commitment. Gilmore eventually convinced him to be in a committed relationship, but she still had issues trusting him.
Huntzberger’s family didn’t like Gilmore at all and thought she wasn’t good enough for him. This created tension within their relationship and sparked arguments between Huntzberger and his parents. He also proposed to Gilmore in a public setting without talking to her about it first. She didn’t have an answer for him and it was an extremely awkward situation.
Who Was the Best Boyfriend?
Forester was clingy and obsessive, and Mariano never communicated with Gilmore. While I personally love Mariano, I believe that Huntzberger was the best boyfriend for Gilmore while she was at Yale.
Forester was a good first boyfriend, but their relationship was not sustainable because he wasn’t supportive of her dreams.
While Mariano and Gilmore had good chemistry, he treated Gilmore terribly and wasn’t able to be there for her because of his own personal issues.
Huntzberger was supportive of Gilmore’s dreams and was able to provide for her because he had the time and money to invest in her life. They communicated well and had a mutual respect for each other. In my opinion, Huntzberger was the best boyfriend for Gilmore throughout the entirety of the show.
