Since the beginning of rap, artists from the genre have been feuding with each other, for fame or simple pettiness. This trend has continued today, with a variety of artists such as Toronto rapper Drake, who has gotten himself in wide scale beef with Compton rapper Kendrick Lamar.
The two artists haven’t been on the best terms for some time now. In 2013, Lamar called out Drake in a verse from the song Control and ever since, they have been putting subliminal disses in their music.
Now, in 2024, the lyrics have been a lot less subtle. In the song Like That, Lamar teamed up with famed producer Metro Boomin and rapper Future to throw shots at Drake and J. Cole, an artist that collaborated with Drake on the song First Person Shooter.
Cole responded to the diss on the song 7 Minute Drill where he criticized Lamar’s albums and the break he takes in between them. He also questioned the reasoning for the diss, stating If he wasn’t dissin’, then we wouldn’t be discussin’ him, alluding to the fact that Kendrick is doing this for relevancy.
The song was received negatively, with fans saying it didn’t sound like him at all. Others also had issues with transphobic lines and an overall mediocre feeling of the song. During one of his shows, Cole decided to be the bigger man and apologize for the diss, as well as stating he’d be removing the track from streaming services.
Drake did not back down, and instead stood his ground by releasing a response. He previewed a brand new song on the radio and released it the following week. The song was targeted towards a lot of people, including the producer Metro Boomin, but was primarily aimed at Lamar.
Recently this feud has gotten more intense, with Lamar and Drake responding with back to back songs with a lot of career ending allegations and a collection of craftful lyrics. Fans have no time to take in any information with the speed of which these tracks are coming out. As this rap beef hits its boiling point, fans are excited to see who will come out on top.
