New librarian Gabrielle Brown wants to create a welcoming environment that meets the needs of all students and staff.
“I truly believe there is a book for every reader and a reader for every book,” Brown said.
She has much experience as a librarian, working a total of 13 years (4 of them at Lake Highlands Elementary).
”I loved being a school librarian to elementary students, but I wanted to expand my experience by working in secondary school with older students.”
The biggest difference to Ms. Brown about working in high school is her students having jobs.
“I have students who work at Target, Starbucks, Chipotle, Marshalls, In and Out and Tom Thumb.”
Brown grew up in East Texas, and moved to Dallas as a teenager and attended a fairly small high school in Tyler.
”It was nowhere near as large as Lake Highlands. We only had about 40 kids in our graduating class.”
Following her high school graduation, Brown continued her education in the University of Texas at Dallas getting a bachelor’s degree, and received a degree in library information science from the University of North Texas.
So far the beginning of the school year has been awesome for her.
“ The staff and students have been so welcoming to me. I am so glad that I made the decision to become a librarian, and I am super excited that I get to do it here at Lake Highlands High School!”
