In the past few years, artificial intelligence has had a huge boom, starting with OpenAI’s GPT-3.5 in 2022. Because of how accessible and popular this tech has become, anyone with a phone can have access to their own personal JARVIS.
So how has it impacted the students of LHHS?
In a survey done about AI use, 79 percent of the 112 students said they use AI in general, with 70 percent of them using it in school as well.
The subjects AI is used for the most are math, science, and English.
Most of the uses were to study for a class, to explain an assignment, or to check work, but there were a handful of people who said they use it to cheat.
Additionally, students could also rely solely on AI to pass their classes, with 30 percent stating that without it, they would be struggling in school.
A few teachers have also voiced their opinions on artificial intelligence.
“I do not approve of students using AI on any level. Society is losing its grip on reality and intelligence if we continue to rely so heavily on AI,” commented dual credit English teacher Aimey Washmon.
On the other hand, physics teacher Brooke McGough has a more optimistic view on how AI can be used as a tool.
“It is the future and we as teachers need to incorporate it and teach them how to use it to their benefit,” she added.
At the end of the day, it’s how students use it.
“AI can be used for both good and bad,” stated biology teacher Nick Whitham. “Students could be using AI to enhance their learning but they almost never use it for that.”
As artificial intelligence becomes more ingrained into our lives and education, it is important to remember that just like any other source of information, it should be used ethically and responsibly.
