The Wildcat Corner Store is bringing in the dough! They’re making an unbelievable amount of money for the school by selling snacks and drinks during lunch..
Last year, the store made a profit of $11,000, and so far have made about $12,000 (gross) this year, stated JulieAnn Bever, sponsor. The money goes towards DECA, which is the student organization for business classes, and other school needs.
It also goes into the Campus Activities Fund, which provides money for any events or activities that benefit the student body. This can include senior class activities or Fresh Fruit Friday. They haven’t given any money out yet this year, but they’re deciding where to put it.
The Wildcat Corner Store has been open for about a month this year, and they sell a variety of snacks and drinks. They partnered with Rush Bowls Dallas at White Rock to get acai bowls and protein bites. All the food is pre-prepared except for the cookies, which are baked from frozen dough every lunch.
“We make the cookies fresh everyday to serve our customers. We also make the slushie mix using multiple different syrups,” commented employee Lanie Harper (12).
The store is run by students that are enrolled in the Practicum of Entrepreneurship class. This opportunity allows students to experience what it’s like to run a small business.
“Working the store gives you hands-on experience with a fast spaced environment in working or managing a store! Our teacher teaches us the importance of money and product management,” said employee Finley Peterson (12).
There are different stations that the students can work at, and they receive a schedule every week for where they’re going to be working. They rotate different roles and responsibilities weekly.
“You can bake cookies, serve the coffee, serve the slushies, be the register person, help with getting snacks for students, check IDs, or do promotions which include walking during the lunches with a sign saying we are open,” Peterson described.
The Wildcat Corner Store is a great place for students to get treats during the day, while also fundraising for the school and providing students with hands-on business experience.
