With the vast pool of jobs available today, it can be difficult to see how broader subjects like math and social studies will really benefit you in the future.
Luckily, LHHS has several specialized programs that allow students to pursue subjects they’re actually interested in. One such program, animal science, has been slowly growing since its implementation in 2021, and this year, the classroom received a full makeover.
Interactive smart boards, a dog washing room, a reception area, and a storage and prep room were all added to the space.
“I try to make concepts & topics as hands-on as possible and have tried to add to our classroom collection of livestock/animal ‘tools’ each year,” shared Marry Medders, the head of the program.
These changes are part of the program’s dog washing business that will open soon. Practicum in Agriculture students will learn customer service skills, time management, scheduling, and marketing through the business.
“I also hope that students who aspire to work with animals in their future, either as a groomer, ranch manager, or veterinarian can gain important hands-on experience through the courses offered here at LHHS,” Medders explained.
The date of the Grand Opening for the business has not been determined yet, but it should be coming in the near future. You can also look forward to a doggy daycare that will eventually be added.
“The new additions to the classroom make it super engaging because all of the students work hands-on and as a team,” commented Stella Jeakins (12), a student who has been in the program for 4 years.
While the additions are helpful in their own right, the passion Medders puts into the program is what really makes it shine.
“Ms. Medders has benefited our learning program by always being there for her students, being super flexible, and making us her main priority,” Jeakins stated.
