The sequel to the Five Nights at Freddy’s movie hit theaters last Friday, and it’s no surprise Blumhouse decided to make another movie. The games are staples in the childhoods of Gen Z, and the first film made almost $300 million internationally, according to IMDb.
I’ve seen it, and if you are a die-hard fan of FNAF, I would run to the theaters and watch it…but if you don’t know anything about the game, I think you should sit this one out.
The film is set a while after the first one. The sister of Mike Schmidt, Abby, goes on an adventure to find her animatronic friends. On her quest she finds the original Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzaria, and the secrets it holds, which reveal more about the antagonist, William Afton, and his family.
So far, FNAF 2 has been met with negative reviews by critics, scoring a 12% on Rotten Tomatoes, a 5.8 on IMDb.
Do the critics have a point? As a fan of the games, I strongly disagree with low reviews on this film, but that doesn’t mean the criticism isn’t warranted.
The movie had its fair share of mediocre acting and poorly written dialogue, and there were some very cheesy scenes.
They did improve on the horror aspect of the film though. The PG-13 rating was pushed a lot more than the first installment, and I was left startled at the jumpscares.
Now, as someone who has grown up with this franchise, I was so happy with how they executed the references.
The story diverges from the game a lot, but the callbacks are amazing, and I got so excited when I noticed the references.
My favorite part of the movie was the Marionette. While I wish they executed the character a little differently, the design is faithful to the game and surprisingly terrifying.
