As of the 2025-2026 school year, cosmetology teachers Syreeta Love and Brandie James have introduced an all new barbering program to Lake Highlands High School.
This is set to be the first year of a four-year program where our talented Wildcat students of grades 9-12 will have the opportunity to learn the ways of cutting and styling hair so that they can pursue a barber career after high school if that’s where their interest lies.
James explained her thoughts on starting the program.
“The barbering program is a long time coming and an amazing opportunity for so many students with some incredible talent,” she said. “The Barbering program also gives our Cosmetology students the opportunity to become dual licensed by graduation next year.”
In addition, the students will be able to take on some fun activities along the way, which includes using dolls to learn how to run their own salon before eventually getting the chance to cut and style hair for real clients as they grow into the program.
Barbering student and sophomore Michael Espinoz explained what inspired him to join the program.
“I am already a barber and was offered last year to join the barbering program,” he said. “I love participating in class and enjoy this class because being a barber is something I’ve loved to do. My dream career path is to someday be a successful barbershop owner.”
Another student, freshman Daidrian Azard, also expressed his inspiration for the program.
“I get to learn a new experience and a new tool to use in life,” he said. “I love participating in class so much because barbering is something that I always wanted to do. My dream career path after I graduate is to play basketball for a college and do barbering as a side hobby.”
