A new club at Lake Highlands is forming the world’s future movie critics. The Movie Club watches, discusses, and reviews movies together during advisory and after school.
“Movie club is a lot like book club. We […] pick a movie and we watch it during the week and analyze how we felt, what caused us to feel that way, if we liked or hated it, breaking down scenes, characters, settings, directorial decisions, anything that relates to a movie being a movie,” explained club sponsor David Martinez, economics and U.S. government teacher.
So far they’ve watched “Mission Impossible,” “The Night of the Living Dead,” “The Birds (1963),” “The Invisible Man,” “Dracula (1931),” “West Side Story,” and “The Sound of Music.” They have themed months to decide which movies to watch. October was horror movies, November was musical movies, and December is holiday associated movies.
“My favorite movie so far has probably been The Birds from 1963. It was a pretty ridiculous movie so it was pretty fun to watch and talk about,” said club president, Brandon Breeckner (11).
They watch the movies outside of school and discuss and review the movies in club meetings. Members have to privately pay for streaming services, but most movies they pick are publicly available through free streaming services such as Tubi, Xumo Play, and the Internet Archive. They try to keep discussions spoiler free for the members that didn’t get the chance to watch.
The Movie Club plans to see a movie in theaters at the end of the year. You can find them selling food at Fun Food Fridays in the HUB. New students can join by going to Martinez’s room (H-B308) after school on Wednesdays.
