LHHS’s teacher of the year has been decided: congratulations to social studies teacher Marisha Watson!
According to Kerri Jones, Watson was chosen because of her dedication to her students and her ability to always go above and beyond when creating unique lessons.
“It is not uncommon to see her dressed up as a historical figure in class or leading an engaging activity that will help learning stick,” Jones stated.
She has been able to create a classroom where her students feel seen and supported.
“She really takes time to study and observe how students learn or how she can get students to stay engaged,” commented her student Daija Perkins (12).
Watson’s students come out of her class with skills they can use in all areas of life.
“Ms. Watson’s class has benefited me by improving my critical thinking and helping me learn how to analyze information instead of just memorizing dates,” added Alyssa Miller (11).
Watson has been teaching here for 3 years, but her history with the school goes further back. Both Watson and her mother are Lake Highlands alumni, Watson having graduated in the Class of 2001. In 2019, she began work as a substitute teacher, and now she has taught World Geography, Psychology, and U.S. History.
“This school is home for me, and the students, staff, and community make it a very special place to teach,” Watson expressed.
Her high school years at Lake Highlands actually contributed to her interest in education.
“I remembered being part of the TAFE club (Teacher Association Future Educators) at LHHS, where I had the opportunity to teach at North Lake Elementary during my junior year. Those experiences confirmed that education was where my heart belonged.”
While Watson appreciates the title of teacher of the year, her true pride comes from watching her students grow.
“My favorite part of teaching is watching students grow—academically, emotionally, and personally. It’s a special feeling when I see that ‘aha’ moment or when I watch a student gain confidence makes everything worth it,” she shared.
