This year, Lake Highlands welcomed the Dice and Discovery club where students get together to play the popular role playing game Dungeons and Dragons.
President of the club Peter Wibben (9) started this club to share his love of D&D with others. Since he started playing in 2021, he has enjoyed the game “for the freedom of choice you have. It makes room for lots of creativity and personality as you play.”
“My goals for this club are to get more people into D&D and to make it more fun so it continues even after I leave,” Wibben said.
The game consists of characters that form a group, called a party, and play out a completely unique story, overseen by the Dungeon Master (DM). The DM will describe a situation that impacts the plot. Players state their character’s actions, and dice are rolled to determine the outcome. The game continues as the DM narrates the results of those actions, continuing the narrative with imagination and unpredictability.
So far the club has two parties, and experienced members of the club have taught new players how to fill out character sheets. They hope to get started the first campaigns of the year in the upcoming weeks.
For those just starting out as players, Wibben recommends “building a character you think would be the coolest. Don’t worry about what is good and powerful because that will be less fun than what you like.”
The Dice and Discovery club is currently full for players, but you can join the waitlist or become a Dungeon Master to add another party! To join the waitlist, contact Wibben at [email protected].
