At LHHS, many juniors and seniors are planning to join a four year college after high school, but some students have different plans that include joining trade school.
About 3 percent of 200 people at Lake Highlands said they were interested in joining a trade school.
Seniors Steven Lian and Jakobi Stevenson have already made up their minds on joining trade school.
Lian is going to UTI for their Automotive program. Lian chose trade school because of the amount of time needed as it’s only a year. He is interested in working on cars because it is a hands-on career.
“I’ve always been into cars but never knew what was going on in the insides of the car and having the opportunity to be able to actually know what’s under the hood and all that.”
Stevenson is going to Dallas College trade school since it’s a cheaper option, as well as easier to get into. He wants to become a plumber because they earn a lot of money.
“It gives more opportunities to make money,” he claimed. “Most of the time people will try to make their own business after receiving their licence for the field they’re certified with.”
He didn’t choose the typical path of a four year college because instead of sitting behind a computer all day, he’d rather be active and do interesting work.
“I’ve had tons of problems with the plumbing in every apartment I’ve moved into and the plumbers take a good few weeks before checking it out, I’d rather be able to fix it myself.”
College and Career counselor Kerri Macy assists students going to trade school. Macy recommends students not go into a private school since it’s more costly than going to Dallas College. If your family income is below a certain amount, then you get free tuition.
